How to Fold a Fitted Sheet

Folding fitted sheets can often be a challenging task. If you’ve ever balled one up and shoved it in a closet, you’re definitely not alone. As individuals transition to independent living, acquiring this skill can enhance the organization of the linen closet and leave a positive impression on roommates. A straightforward approach can make the process more manageable and efficient. By following a few simple steps, it is possible to achieve a neat and tidy fold. Plus, it saves space, meaning more room for snacks, shoes, or extra blankets in your closet. With a bit of practice, anyone can become a pro at folding fitted sheets.

The Prep Work

Before diving into the folding process, there are a few things you need to do to set yourself up for success.

  1. Find a large, flat surface: Your bed or a clean floor works great. A clean kitchen table or a dorm lounge table can also work in a pinch. You need enough space to spread out the sheet completely.
  1. Shake it out: Give your fitted sheet a good shake to remove any wrinkles or bunched-up areas. This will make the folding process much easier.
  1. Turn it inside out: Flip the sheet so that the elastic edges are facing outward. This might seem counterintuitive, but trust us, it helps! This trick makes it easier to line up the corners, which tends to be the most frustrating part.

The Folding Process

Now that you’re prepped, let’s get into the actual folding. Don’t worry if it takes a few tries to get it right – practice makes perfect!

  1. Create a rectangle: Hold the sheet up in front of you, with your hands inside the top two corners. Bring your hands together, folding the sheet in half with the right sides together. Tuck the corners into each other, creating a neat pocket. If you’re stuck, pull up a quick video tutorial for backup—it’s way easier once you see it done.
  1. Fold in the elastic edges: Smooth out the edges, folding the elastic underneath to create straight lines. This step is crucial for achieving that crisp, folded look.  Don’t stress if it still looks a little wonky—this step is all about effort over perfection.
  1. Fold in half again: Bring the opposite corners together, creating a smaller rectangle. Make sure to tuck the corners into each other just like in step 1.
  1. Smooth and fold: Lay the sheet on your flat surface and smooth out any wrinkles. Fold the longer sides into the middle, creating a long, narrow rectangle.
  1. The final folds: Depending on the size of your linen closet, fold this rectangle into halves or thirds until you reach your desired size. You can even store it inside one of its matching pillowcases to keep your sets together.

Conclusion

Congratulations! You’ve just mastered one of adulthood’s trickiest tasks. You’re now officially ahead of about 70% of the population—including many fully matured adults. With a little practice, you’ll be folding fitted sheets like a pro in no time. Not only will your closet look more organized, but you’ll also feel a sense of accomplishment every time you tackle laundry day. Remember, it’s okay if it’s not perfect – even a somewhat neatly folded fitted sheet is better than a crumpled mess! The goal isn’t Pinterest-perfect—it’s “can I stack this in a drawer without it attacking me later?”
